2024-2025 Season

Reason To Be

Written by Harvey Mudd student Devon Tao '25 Reason to Be is a musical about a former pianist Val, who must rediscover the meaning of hope in a time of crisis. In a story inspired by A Christmas Carol, Val takes a personal journey through their past, present, and future where they reconnect with old friends, hang out with ghosts, and rediscover their passion for music. Reason to Be is about resilience, it's about hope, and it's about the healing powers of music.

The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals

The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is the first Starkid musical produced by Spotlight MT and was a fabulous fall musical. Starring students from across the 5C's, including a last minute step in by the director himself, this show dazzled audiences with its fun humor and show stopping numbers.

2023-2024 Season

Little Shop of Horrors

An amazing show full of hilarious characters and amazing singing (and don't forget man eating plants). Little Shop was a fan favorite, full of giant green puppets, fun musical numbers, and talented student actors. See our Instagram page for some behind the scenes looks, show photos, and nostalgia as we all remember to not feed the plants!

The Old Man and the Old Moon

Pirates, ghosts, an old man, a hot air balloon, and a big fish...what more could you ask for? Created by PigPen Theatre Co., this show blends folk music, shadow puppetry, and vaguely Anglo-Irish accents to create a wonderful musical about love, loss, and the power of storytelling.

2022-2023 Season

It Just Takes Time

A new musical about an ensemble of characters persevering through hardships and finding connection during the pandemic, written by one of our clubs founders Annika Hoseth (Pomona '23). Performed with a live band, this show was an amazing senior project and showcased Annika's musical theatre writing talent!

Spring Awakening

As biggest show Spotlight had done up to this point, Spring Awakening was a smash hit that rivaled the Pomona Theater Department's Head Over Heels that ran just a few months before. Showcasing amazing talent from the 5C's, this musical made audiences laugh and maybe even cry. Check out our Instagram for show photos and behind the scenes looks.

Villain-tines Day

A queer cabaret show featuring a series of devious and down right dastardly songs from several different musicals (Heathers, Hadestown, etc.) The full show was live-streamed and is still available on our Instagram page. Check out some cool numbers and musical fun.

Show date:  2/11/2023

HOME: A BIPOC Musical Showcase

The subtitle of this show, Honoring Resistance, Pursuing Release, was a fitting descriptions for Spotlight's first show of the season. In collaboration with ACT (Artists of Color Together) Spotlight showcased some amazing musical theatre talent from across the 5C's. An immersive musical experience, this show was loved by audiences and set the bar for the rest of our season.

2021-2022 Season

You're the Shit!

Imposter syndrome strikes again! An unsuspecting college student who previously felt confident in her math classes finds herself doubting her abilities, but ultimately discovers how to persevere and lean on others. A semi-autobiographical piece written by  Annika Hoseth, before she wrote It Just Takes Time which was featured in our season the next year.

The Winner Takes It All

This show first started in December as a live-stream event (still available on our Instagram page) due to COVID restrictions, and eventually put on a few months later for live audiences. This ABBA-inspired art heist musical was created by Rinny Williamson (SC '23), who got the idea when she heard about a Mamma Mia re-write contest. And she wrote two-hour musical in just two weeks,

Show date: 12/10/2021

Don't Tell Mama

A cabaret show featuring Broadways "Wildest and Raunchiest" music, from Chicago's "Cell Block Tango" to "Mamma Who Bore Me" from Spring Awakening (later performed when Spotlight produced this musical in our 2022-2023 season). Besides The Rocky Horror Picture Show (first performed in the same year as this show), Don't Tell Mama is definitely the most risqué show Spotlight has ever produced.

2020-2021 Season (Opening Season)

May 2021: The Addams Family

Spotlight MT, The Green Room, and Under the Lights collaborated on a year-long project, resulting in a remotely recorded, movie-musical production of The Addams Family, seen by over 1000 audience members!

May 2021: Celebrating Connection

To celebrate the end of a virtual school year, and the graduation of many foundational Spotlight members, we produced and created a musical revue entitled "Celebrating Connection," complete with solos, duets, small groups, and a fantastic lip-sync dance number.

April 2021: Corona Cutie

In April 2021, Spotlight MT co-produced Corona Cutie with TGR, a student-written musical by Lucy Geller, and directed by Rosie Corr. Corona Cutie follows Claire through the chaos of online dating and finding herself during quarantine. It was a huge hit, and received rave reviews in TSL!

March 2020: Pure Imagination

A Musical Revue for All Ages

Our debut production was cancelled due to coronavirus. But, the generous donations of ticket buyers, who opted to donate their fee rather than getting a refund, will be donated to CEF.

Join us in a world of "Pure Imagination" for Spotlight MT's debut production! Featuring songs from favorites such as Into the Woods, Beauty and The Beast, Anastasia, and more, this show will delight audience members of all ages. You are invited to come dressed in your favorite fantastical or royal attire, though it is by no means required. In addition to fantastic theatre, there will also be a raffle and silent auction! All proceeds will go to Claremont Educational Foundation, which supports the arts within CUSD.
